Hyrox® is a fitness race with a fixed format worldwide — 8 km of running split into 8 legs, with a functional station between each one — and it’s reaching Portugal on the back of the growth it’s already had in Spain and across Europe. If you’re searching “Hyrox® Portugal”, you probably want three things: to understand what it is, to know whether there’s a race near you, and how to train for it. Let’s take it step by step, without inventing dates or venues: there’s always one reliable source for the official calendar, and we’ll tell you which.
What is Hyrox®?
Hyrox® is an indoor fitness competition built for anyone in reasonable shape, not just elite athletes. Unlike CrossFit®, where the daily workout (the WOD) changes constantly, Hyrox® is always the same known format: you run 1 km, do a station, run another 1 km, do the next station, and so on until you’ve completed 8 runs and 8 stations.
That makes it very trainable: you know exactly what you’ll face on race day. It’s held in indoor arenas, in singles, doubles and relay categories, which makes it accessible if you want to give it a go without being at peak fitness.

Are there Hyrox® races in Portugal?
Hyrox® has expanded fast across Europe and runs seasons with dozens of races in different cities, and Portugal — with a strong fitness scene in Lisbon, Porto and beyond — is a natural market for that expansion.
Now the honest part: venues and dates change every season, and pinning them here makes no sense because they’d go stale. The reliable, always-current source is the official calendar at hyrox.com — find your region and check whether a race is held in Portugal or just across the border. If there isn’t one near you in a given season, many athletes travel to the races in Spain, which already has several confirmed cities.
You can see how the neighbouring country’s race cluster is organised in the Hyrox® calendar for Spain, useful as a reference for format and logistics (entries, categories, how a race weekend works).
What if there’s no race near me?
That’s no obstacle to start training. The Hyrox® format is identical in any city in the world, so you can prepare now and choose your race later — whether in Portugal, in Spain or in another country.
The 8 Hyrox® stations
The order is always the same, and you run 1 km between each one:
- SkiErg (cross-country ski machine).
- Sled push.
- Sled pull.
- Burpee broad jumps.
- Rowing machine.
- Farmers carry (kettlebell carry).
- Sandbag lunges.
- Wall balls (throwing a ball to a target).
The real challenge isn’t each exercise in isolation, but doing it with your heart rate already high after running. You’ve got the station-by-station breakdown, with training examples, in Hyrox® WODs: how to train the 8 stations.
How to train for Hyrox®
You don’t need everything on day one. Work in blocks over several weeks:
- Running engine. Run under fatigue: intervals and steady pace. The goal is to hold your pace when you’re already tired.
- Leg strength-endurance. Sleds, lunges and wall balls punish the lower body. Squats and glute work are your base.
- Push and pull. SkiErg, rowing and sleds combine both patterns.
- Transitions. What makes the difference: switching from running to the station and back to running on “jelly legs”.
You’ve got the step-by-step plan in how to prepare for your first Hyrox®, and what to wear and put on your feet in Hyrox® clothing and shoes.
Where to train Hyrox® in Portugal with a drop-in
The most common obstacle is kit: few gyms have a SkiErg, sled and Hyrox® sandbags all at once. The flexible way to reach that equipment is to book a drop-in — a single class, with no membership — at a box that has it.
That way you train the real stations before the race and decide afterwards whether to join that box. How it works:
- Look for centres in the Hyrox® category or filter by your city.
- Confirm the box has a sled, SkiErg and sandbags before booking.
- Pick a day and time and confirm your place from €10.
If you’re not sure what a drop-in is, we explain it in what a CrossFit drop-in is and how to book — it works the same for Hyrox® boxes. And if you’re travelling to compete, see how to drop in while travelling.
Global Wod Pass is growing in Portugal. As boxes come on board, you’ll be able to book your practice drop-in right on the platform; subscribe and we’ll let you know.
Frequently asked questions
Is there Hyrox® in Portugal?
Hyrox® is expanding fast across Europe and Portugal is a natural market. Because venues and dates change each season, always check the official calendar at hyrox.com to confirm whether a race is held in the country in a given season.
Do I need to do CrossFit® to compete in Hyrox®?
No. Hyrox® is built for anyone in reasonable shape. CrossFit® helps, but you can prepare with running and strength-endurance work.
Where do I train the stations if my gym doesn’t have the kit?
Book a drop-in at a box equipped with a sled, SkiErg and sandbags. You pay only for the session, with no membership.
