What a Hyrox® race is
Hyrox® is a standardised fitness race: 8 kilometres of running split into eight 1 km segments, with a functional station between each one. The course is identical in any city in the world, so you can train exactly what you’ll face on race day. The order of the stations is always the same: SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmer’s carry, sandbag lunges and wall balls.
You can compete in several formats (individual, doubles or relays) and in the Open or Pro category, which changes the loads. You choose based on your level and your goal.
Formats: which one suits you
For your first race, the format shapes the experience a lot:
- Individual: you tackle the full race on your own. It’s the most demanding challenge and the most common among those chasing a benchmark time.
- Doubles: the two of you split the stations, running the 8 km together. A good gateway if you’re going with a partner of a similar level.
- Relays: four people take turns. The most accessible option to debut without months of training behind you.
The Open category uses standard loads and Pro raises the weight on the sleds, sandbags and wall balls. Start with Open unless you already come from a competitive background.
How to choose your race
A couple of criteria to help you decide which one to sign up for:
- Proximity and logistics: for your first Hyrox®, a venue you can reach without hassle takes the pressure off. Tenerife, Valencia and Barcelona already have a confirmed venue; Bilbao, Madrid and Málaga were still to be confirmed.
- Preparation time: count backwards from the date. With 8 to 12 weeks of structured training you’ll be ready to complete your first race. If you choose Tenerife (September), start training in summer; for Madrid or Málaga (spring 2027) you have plenty of margin.
- Atmosphere: the big-city venues (Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia) tend to draw bigger crowds and more atmosphere. Tenerife opens the season and Málaga closes it.
How to prepare for a Hyrox®
Your preparation rests on three pillars that are best worked on at the same time:
- Running under fatigue: it’s not enough to run fresh. Train your running after strength blocks to get your body used to moving tired, which is exactly how you’ll reach each 1 km segment.
- Strength-endurance: the stations don’t demand maximal strength, but rather holding reps with good technique. Squats, lunges, deadlifts and pulling and pushing work cover almost everything.
- Practising the stations: the sled, the SkiErg and the wall balls all have their technique. Having them automatic before race day avoids surprises.
You’ll find the week-by-week plan and the most common mistakes in the guide how to prepare for your first Hyrox®, and how to build specific sessions in Hyrox® WODs to train the 8 stations. For kit, check what clothing and shoes you need for Hyrox®.
How to find a box to train for Hyrox®
Not every gym has sleds, a SkiErg or sandbags. The flexible way to access the equipment without becoming a member is to book a drop-in at boxes that have it, paying only per session. Search for centres in the Hyrox® category or the CrossFit® category, filter by your city and check the equipment before you book. If you’ve never booked a single class before, start with what a drop-in is and how it works.
