A box is the name given to a CrossFit® gym: an open, machine-free space where you train in coach-led classes following the WOD (workout of the day). The word “box” comes from what the place looks like: a warehouse-style unit with barbells, plates, rings, boxes and open floor to move around. The difference from a conventional gym isn’t just the equipment, it’s the way you train: in a group, coached, and with a different plan every day. Below you’ll see how a box works, the role the coach and community play, and how to choose yours.

What exactly is a CrossFit® box

A CrossFit® box is a gym specialised in this training method. Instead of rows of machines and treadmills, you’ll find a wide area with functional gear: Olympic barbells, kettlebells, jump boxes, ropes, rings and rowers. The floor is usually built to lift and drop weight.

You don’t train on your own. Everything revolves around scheduled classes where the whole group does the same WOD under a coach’s supervision. If you’re not sure what a WOD is, we explain it in detail in what a WOD is: it’s the programmed block of work that changes every day.

How it differs from a regular gym

The distinction goes beyond the name. These are the real differences:

How a class at a box works

A typical class lasts about 60 minutes and always follows a recognisable structure:

  1. Warm-up and mobility to prepare the body.
  2. Technique or strength piece, where you drill a movement (a squat or a clean, for example) or lift weight.
  3. The WOD, the intense central part, with a time or rep format.
  4. Cool-down and stretching.

The coach scales the movements for each person, so the same class works for an absolute beginner and an advanced athlete alike. You can see what these movements look like in CrossFit® exercises.

The role of the coach and the community

The coach is the main difference from training by yourself. Their job isn’t just to set the WOD: they correct your technique in real time, keep you from getting injured and match the weight to your level. In your first class, a good coach will give you extra attention to explain the basics.

The community is the other pillar. At a box people know your name, you train with the same faces and there’s a culture of cheering each other on through the WOD. For many people, that atmosphere is what turns training into a habit that lasts years.

What a drop-in is and why it matters

A drop-in is a single class you pay for per session, with no membership and no tie-in, at a box you don’t belong to. It’s the best way to try a box before joining, and also to keep training when you travel. Prices usually start from €10 depending on the box. You’ll find the full guide in what a drop-in CrossFit® class is, and price ranges in drop-in prices in Spain.

How to choose a CrossFit® box

Not all boxes are the same. Before you commit, look at:

The easiest way to compare is to try a few with a drop-in before committing to a membership.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a CrossFit® gym called a “box”?

Because of how the place looks: an open, warehouse-style unit (a “box”), with no machines, functional gear and open floor to train as a group.

What’s the difference between a box and a regular gym?

At a box you train in coach-led classes, with a different WOD every day and as part of a community; at a conventional gym you use the machines on your own, at your own pace.

Can I go to a box without being a member?

Yes. Most accept drop-ins: you pay for a single class from €10, with no membership and no tie-in. It’s ideal for trying a box before joining.

Do I need to be fit to train at a box?

No. The coach scales every movement to your level. You start to get fit, not the other way around.
